It takes a brave soul to start up one’s own business following retirement. Yet for Doctor Michael Bardy and his wife Anne their new venture is the result of a 40 year old passion in Michael’s case, and for Anne the chance to develop a recently discovered talent. Over the past four decades, during his career as a renowned Ophthalmologist, Michael has spent his spare time travelling extensively in the pursuit of treasures from around the world. |
| |
The resulting collection of antiques and arts du monde span centuries and continents to provide a fascinating historical and societal insight into cultures worldwide. Following retirement, Michael began his search for the perfect space in which to display for sale his wide-ranging and ever-increasing collection. His hunt led him to premises on the King’s Road that, following extensive refurbishment, now house the eclectic Bardy collection. |

The Saqqara gallery is named after one of the most important necropolis of the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and, as in the case of its namesake, there are a wealth of treasures to be uncovered at the gallery, including ornamental tribal headdresses from the East, French Art Deco pieces and even a meteorite…. Michael’s collection of diverse artefacts is guaranteed to capture the imagination of the inquisitive visitor and fellow collectors; every surface yields fascinating objects, steeped in history. |

The gallery is also home to CAB London, Anne Bardy’s collection of handmade jewellery, including fabulous beaded bracelets and ornamental charms. CAB London began in 2003 after Anne began to deconstruct old jewellery to create her own distinctive pieces, using Murano glass, precious and semi-precious stones, pearls, coral, gold and silver. The enthusiastic reaction of friends and acquaintances to Anne’s work spurred her on to expand to her own line. The unique pieces, produced from exquisite beads sourced from around the world, can now be found in CAB London’s custom-built jewellery showroom within the gallery and serve as wonderful presents, or treats for oneself. |

As the Bardy’s joint venture takes root on the legendary London road, it would seem that Michael and Anne are a long way from ultimate retirement as Michael continues in his quest to uncover arts du monde and the demand grows for Anne’s hand-made gems. The medical world’s loss would certainly appear to be the art world’s gain. |
